At Count Her In Sports, our mission is simple:
KEEPING GIRLS IN SPORTS
Female sports participation is on a radical decline, with barriers like lack of access, body image concerns, and limited access to quality coaching driving girls away from the game. Yet, the connection between sports and leadership is undeniable—94% of women in C-suite executive roles are former athletes, and 85% of women attribute their career success to skills they developed through sports.
We’re here to change the narrative. By breaking down barriers, fostering confidence, and promoting inclusion, we aim to reverse this trend and create a brighter future for our daughters. We’re building pathways that tell every girl she is worthy, capable, and qualified to embrace the opportunities sports provide.
Together, we can ensure every girl has the chance to lead, thrive, and excel—on and off the field.
At Count Her In Sports, we’re dedicated to empowering young females by ensuring they have equal opportunities to participate in sports across Canada. Sports should be accessible to everyone, yet the statistics tell a different story: 1 in 3 girls drop out of sports by late adolescence, compared to just 1 in 10 boys.
We believe that sports are about more than striving for elite-level achievements—they are a foundation for lifelong skills like leadership, teamwork, self-confidence, resilience, and self-discipline.
These benefits extend far beyond the field, shaping who we are and how we navigate the world.
Meet Our Team
Kara Murray, CEO
As a devoted mother of triplets, business leader, and advocate for equality, my life revolves around learning, stepping outside my comfort zone, and setting a positive example. My journey of raising three children together has sharpened my focus on creating balanced, enriching experiences. When my children first joined recreational sports, I saw firsthand how these early years shape essential life skills like leadership, confidence, resilience, and teamwork. Recognizing a disparity in opportunities for young girls, I was inspired to take action.
Today, through my nonprofit, I’m committed to ensuring my daughter—and all young female athletes—have the same access to empowering opportunities as her brothers. By fostering equal experiences in sports and leadership, I hope to help build a generation of strong, capable young women who can confidently face any challenge.

I joined Count Her In Sports because I believe every girl deserves a shot to experience the power of sports. Growing up, I was blessed with parents who made sure I had the chance to play. The lessons I learned on the field—how to win and lose gracefully, lean on my teammates, and always give my best effort—shaped who I am today.
Now, as a business owner, I realize those experiences laid the groundwork for my confidence, resilience, and joy in helping others. I get pretty choked up when I think about how much sports gave me, and I want all girls to have the same opportunities. Count Her In Sports feels like the perfect way to give back, creating leaders and sparking that same fire in young hearts.

I am a passionate advocate for empowering girls through sports and supporting their mental and physical well-being. Growing up as a competitive athlete and always prioritizing an active lifestyle, I understand the transformative benefits of sports in building confidence, strength, and a sense of belonging. I am currently preparing to pursue graduate studies in Clinical Psychology, and I’m committed to helping others experience the powerful connection between physical activity and mental health.
Joining Count Her In Sports has given me the opportunity to recognize the disparities that exist in athletics, uplift others, value the importance of teamwork, provide greater opportunities, and ensure female athletes have the resources to thrive in all aspects of life, both on and off the field.

As a mother of three athletic daughters, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges young female athletes face in pursuing competitive sports. Growing up, I wasn't the most athletic, but I loved being a part of a team. Whether I was on the court or cheering from the bench, those experiences shaped who I am today.
Being on a team gave me purpose, accountability, and support, and it taught me leadership skills that I still use today. Unfortunately, I've noticed a lack of opportunities and resources for female athletes today.
That's why I joined Count Her In Sports. I'm passionate about creating pathways for my daughters and other young women to access competitive teams and meaningful sports experiences. Together, we can empower the next generation of female athletes to thrive both on and off the field.

I am so excited and grateful to be a part of the Count Her In Sports team! I played hockey for most of my life, and I credit it as my most formative experience—one that gave me confidence, provided me with community, and instilled a sense of resiliency and determination in my spirit. I am currently pursuing my Canadian and American JD, and the skills I developed playing sports have been instrumental to my journey!
I am dedicated to shaping positive experiences for young female athletes in my community because I understand the power sports have on creating strong leaders. I was inspired by the Count Her In Sports mission as a lack of opportunities, resource disparities and necessary support undeniably impacted my experience as a young female athlete. Supporting girls in my community through their athletic career is incredibly important to me, because I've experienced firsthand the challenges of girls' sports.
I strongly believe in the power of a community that can uplift, inspire, and instill confidence in female athletes to redefine and shape their experiences in sports without limitations.

I am a local Essex County native who grew up as a multi-sport athlete. I am also very involved in the local business and agricultural communities. When not on a rink or field, you will likely find me assisting local business owners or farmers in the area. In my downtime, I enjoy going on hikes with my family and experimenting with growing varieties of vegetables, fruits, and plants in my garden.
Throughout high school, I began coaching and refereeing Basketball, Soccer, and Hockey in the Harrow/Kingsville area. During this period, I spent a large amount of time mentoring two younger multi-sport sisters who went on to be very successful.
Presently, I am coaching Soccer and Hockey in the town of Kingsville. While coaching my daughter for the past 3 years, and running Junior Soccer divisions in Kingsville, it became quite clear to me that female athletic options were sorely needed in Essex County.
My goal is to help provide young female athletes with the tools needed for success on and off the field. I am extremely excited to be a part of the Count Her In Sports team, and I look forward to making a difference in our community.

When I first heard about Count Her In Sports, I knew immediately it was an organization I needed to be a part of. As a former multi-sport female athlete, I understand the powerful impact sports can have on a young person’s life. From forging lifelong friendships to learning crucial life skills like teamwork, discipline, and time management, sports helped shape me into who I am today. I not only learned how to win and lose, but also how to overcome challenges, build resilience, and push my limits both on and off the field.
Now, as a mother of three daughters who are actively involved in multiple sports, I’m excited to give back to girls sports. I believe in empowering girls to dream bigger than I ever could and ensuring they have access to resources, mentorship, and opportunities to help them succeed. I am also a coach of a girls’ travel softball team and strive to be a role model for all my athletes, giving them the tools they need to thrive, not only in their sport but in life.
I look forward to being part of Count Her In Sports, where girls can chase their athletic dreams, build self-confidence, and develop leadership skills that will carry them beyond the game. Sports are not just a game—they are a platform for empowerment. I’m honored to be part of a movement that helps foster a generation of girls who know their worth, believe in themselves, and inspire others to do the same.
